In modern Tarot, the card depicts a naked man and woman, Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden. An Angel hovers above them, extending his hands in a blessing gesture. Behind Eve is the Tree of Knowledge, behind Adam is the Tree of Life. The Lovers is the first card to overcome the dualism of the previous ones: the figures depicted on it are not divided by anything, the opposites are united. But Eve's gaze is directed at the angel, symbolizing this unity, while Adam's gaze is directed at Eve: he is able to realize this unity only through her.

Sometimes a snake is also depicted on this card as a symbol of temptation.

Adam symbolizes the masculine qualities of logic and rational intellect, and Eve — the feminine — intuition and emotional insight. As a result of spiritual quests, these two polarities must eventually unite, for only then will harmony reign. On the Tree of Life, the path of the Lovers comes up from the sphere of Tiphareth (Haromi) and shows a happy and lasting union of opposites.

TARO MEANING: This card essentially represents the attraction (attraction) of two lovers to each other, so on a human level it symbolizes a very important choice in life. We all seek love, and we all experience temptation. At different times, we are attracted to vice, then virtue. From this it is clear that the so-called «multiple-choice-society» (a society where everyone is given many chances) in fact provides people with only the opportunity for colossal self-deception: they believe that the chance to «change their minds» at any moment, to re-decide everything anew, will allow them to more reliably grab the bird of happiness, and they do not know how to be satisfied with what they have achieved, because they always hope to find something better. And the disappointment that can be seen on their faces does not come at all from the fact that their «most important» opportunity never turned up. And because their whole life they lacked the courage and will to make a definite choice at least once, and it passed in useless expectation of this “main thing”, they did not want to spend their strength or feelings on anything else. Only by deciding on a conscious, uncompromising choice and then not retreating from it, we open the way to genuine, deep happiness.

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Love, which illuminates our entire life and changes it in many ways. It has little in common with falling in love, which, as Erich Fromm aptly noted, is at best only a measure of our previous loneliness. Perhaps this time you will get to know another person so deeply for the first time that your troubles and feelings will concern you less than his feelings and troubles. In fortune-telling practice, the Lovers most often mean «friendship and love», that is, the beginning of a new strong feeling or the preservation and strengthening of an old one, the stability of feelings, good relations between people.

That is why in the Marseille and some other Tarot variants, especially the old ones, the Lovers card depicts not two, but three human figures — one young man and two girls. One of the girls personifies purity and innocence, and is usually a blonde, while the other is drawn as a kind of wild brunette seductress. And, according to the plot, the young man makes a mistake, since he is clearly attracted to the brunette, while he should love the blonde.

Therefore, those who have three lovers on this card in their deck should take into account the obvious presence of a motive of betrayal or at least a love triangle (even in the upright position). Those who have two figures on the Lovers card should take this motive into account only in its inverted position (or in combination with other cards of a negative nature).

If you are asked about the outcome of a planned or already started business, then the Lovers mean success and stability, maintaining the status quo. However, stability is not always good: active natures, prone to risk, in a situation of choice would rather prefer the Devil card (XV), promising changes. What these changes will be is unknown, but risk, as you know, is a noble cause.

For people following the esoteric path, the Lovers mean Initiation, initiation, transition to a new level of spiritual development.

Inverted, the Lovers card can mean some deterioration in relations in the union of partners, sometimes (but not always) adultery; in business relations — also problems. But this is temporary, and it is still quite possible to restore good relations.

It promises deep love experiences, but shows that such a step implies a choice: abandoning the previous way of life (parental home, freedom and easy affairs) and moving to a new level, the level of consciousness of Love. Only true awareness of it opens a powerful information field, which the Lovers card contains. That is why it was previously called «Choice». It can also mean some other situation of choice, not necessarily connected with love. Then it means that we will have to make a choice one way or another, decisively and irrevocably, leaving ourselves no loopholes. Which of the two plots appears before us in this case depends on the meaning of the question asked. However, in any case, it is a loud and definite «Yes».
